We aim to keep the cost of these courses very reasonable as we really want to keep women safe on the fells. So we charge only £40 but we also ask if you would also give a voluntary donation of £5 to Penrith Mountain Rescue.
The Mountain Rescue Teams are regularly called out to walkers on the fells who get lost. Many of the people they rescue are found without a map and compass.
We offer a £10 discount on the cost i.e £30 for women on a low income.
The courses will run with a minimum of four women per course and a maximum of ten.
Course leaders and trainers are Sal Cawley, Jackie Jackson and Pip Binks.
You do not need any previous knowledge or skills as you will learn practical skills in a small supportive and non competitive group or in pairs.
You do not need a compass but if you would like to buy one we recommend the Silva Expedition 4 or a compass of a similar standard.
We will lend you a compass/map if you do not have one.
If you are travelling and would like to stay with us we charge £80 (plus voluntary £5 donation) for residential bed and breakfast at Old Farmhouse Moorfoot for previous night/morning of the course (includes lunch).
The courses are run from the Old Farmhouse Moorfoot in Clifton Penrith with tuition indoors in the morning followed by a practical session on and around Helton Fell throughout the afternoon. You will have plenty of time to practice on the fell what you have learnt in the morning.
Then back for afternoon tea and homemade scones.
Participants on our courses in 2010 and 2011 all said they had had an enjoyable time....and now feel more confident to navigate safely!
